|May is American Wetlands Month, and what better way to celebrate than to get out and explore one of Michigan’s Wetland Wonders? Scattered across the state, from Sturgeon River Sloughs Wildlife Management Area in the Upper Peninsula to Pointe Mouillee State Game Area, just 25 miles from the Ohio border, Michigan’s Wetland Wonders provide great year-round recreation opportunities like birding, boating, fishing, hiking, photography, and hunting. Document your trip to one of the Wetland Wonders with a photo of yourself by the game or wildlife area sign and you can enter to win a $1,000 gift card for outdoor gear! The Explore MI Wetland Wonders contest is sponsored by Consumer’s Energy with contest partners MI Birds and Michigan United Conservation Clubs. Four lucky winners will be randomly drawn on July 23. All four winners will receive Cabela’s gift cards in varying amounts. The grand prize winner will take home $1,000, the second prize winner $750, the third prize winner $500, and the fourth prize winner $250. To enter the prize draw, take a selfie by a sign with the name of the state game or wildlife area at one of Michigan’s Wetland Wonders locations. Upper Peninsula: Portage Marsh State Wildlife Management Area (SWMA) (Delta County), Munuscong SWMA (Chippewa County), and Sturgeon River Sloughs SWMA (Houghton and Baraga counties).
Northern Michigan: Manistee Marsh at Manistee River State Game Area (SGA) (Manistee County) and Houghton Lake Flats SWMA (Roscommon County).
Saginaw Bay area: Wigwam Bay State Wildlife Area (SWA) (Arenac County), Nayanquing Point SWA (Bay County), Fish Point SWA (Tuscola County), Crow Island SGA (Saginaw County), and Shiawassee River SGA (Saginaw County).
Southwest Michigan: Fennville Farm Unit at the Allegan SGA (Allegan County), Maple River SGA (Gratiot and Clinton counties), and the Muskegon County Wastewater Facility (Muskegon County).
Southeast Michigan: St. Clair Flats SWA on Harsens Island (St. Clair County) and Pointe Mouillee SGA (Monroe and Wayne counties).
