In general, the weather this past week has still been a bit sketchy. Snow showers, rain,
cold temps. Not the best. Fish are kicking back on the couch and watching Outdoor
Shows. But, a few are reporting good catches of trout, both rainbows, and brookies. A
friend posted that he and two friends limited out on Brookies last weekend. All three of
them. But, would not tell me where. Somewhere in the east Central U.P.
Also, haven’t heard of anybody getting any smelt in the EUP. A few scattered reports
from the western U.P. Also, suckers are starting to pick up. In the Curtis area and in the
western U.P. But, inland lake fishing pretty slow. Not much happening.
However, the one real hot spot this week is L’Anse. Got a good report on Keweenaw
Bay. Doing good over there. Getting lots of everything. Also, quite a few ORVs being
spotted. Most trails are open and muddy, which the ORV people just love. And, getting
quite a few reports of people finding morels. But, still early in that season. From what I
have heard, the ones they are finding are pretty small. Then, the leeks are starting to pop.
Always a tasty treat.
But, here is the Fishing and Outdoor Fun Report for this week:

Drummond Island Johnson’s Sport Shop (906-493-6300.) Your one spot stop for
everything outdoors on the Island. Rick reported last week, “Things are pretty slow.
They’ve been picking up a few perch, but not that many and they have been small. And,
the females they are picking up are still rock hard. Have not even started to spawn yet.
So, we’ve got to get some warmer weather to warm that water up, to get those fish
spawning. But, I have been seeing quite a few ORVs, we’re expecting a few more again
this weekend. Trails are open and in good shape.”

Brevoort Lake: K & V Grocery (906-643-9665) Bait, etc. They have gas, munchies, pop
, and stuff, plus bait and things. And, they are home to the happiest minnows in all of
Moran.
Kathy stated, “Things are pretty slow. Not selling a whole lot of bait. Not many people
out there. Haven’t heard of anybody getting any smelt or suckers. But, we have been

seeing a few ORVs. And, even they have slowed down. Just too cold. Like, it’s colder now
at night than it was for most of the winter. We really need it to warm up.”
Pickford: Wilderness Treasure Shop. They have bait, tackle, and some really pretty
treasures to make that fish camp look pretty. They usually have good info on Munuscong
Lake, the Cedarville and Hessell area, and the St. Mary’s River.
This week, they said, “Fishing has been pretty slow. Hardly anybody fishing. Not selling
hardly any bait. Just too cold. But, everybody is getting ready for May 15th and the
Walleye Opener.”
Curtis: Mick’s Bait Shop. (906-586-6040) They said, “Things are pretty slow. The weather is
not that great. But, we have had a few people out. They’re picking up a few gills,
crappies, and perch. But, pretty slow. And, they are after suckers. Heard they have been
getting a few. But, with the suckers, I’ve heard the trout fishing has slowed down a bit.
But, most people are getting ready for May 15th and the Walleye Opener. And, I am
getting in a good supply of minnows and leeches.”

Deer Park (Muskallonge Lake) Northwest of Newberry, on Lake Superior shore. Bait,
cabins, store, etc. (906-658-3341.) Talked to Christy, the owner, she noted, “Things are
still pretty quiet. We need the weather to warm up a bit. But, I have heard they are getting
a few trout, over in the Two Heart. Nothing on menominees. Nobody has said anything
about them. And, on our lake, it has been pretty quiet. However, I have heard reports of
people getting some walleye. But, the opener is next week. Also, we are starting to rent
boats this weekend, so, I am expecting things to pick up quite a bit. Also, I’ve been
seeing a few ORVs. They all seem happy, out there playing in the mud.”

Autrain Grocery Store and Motel (906-892-8142) Last week, talked to Hannah. She is
always just way fun to talk to. Last week, she said, “We’ve been selling quite a few
crawlers. I guess they’ve been fishing up on Autrain Lake. Not too many fishing at the
mouth of the river. But, I have heard they have been doing really good, out on Lake
Superior. Not sure what they’ve been catching. But, I have heard they are doing really
good. And, we just had a big group of ORVs go by. And, I have not heard of anybody
finding any morels yet. But, we do have good homemade pasties. So, stop in a get a
pasty to go with those crawlers.”
L’Anse: Indian Country Sports: (906-524-6518) Bait, tackle, and a whole lot of good
info.
This week, they reported, “A few people picking up a few smelt. But, not many. Heard of
them getting a few more up around Houghton and over in Ontonogan. But, not many
hear. But, the suckers are really running. Have talked to a lot of people that have done
really great. Also, the people out on Keweenaw Bay are doing really good. Picking up
nice catches of Kings, Coho, Lakers, Steelhead, and Browns. But, they are up in shallow

water. Like, 20’. And, they have been using spoons. But, doing the best on hard body
baits. But, the fishing has been really good.”
Copper Harbor Fuel Stop (906-289-3483) They have gas, pop and munchies, including
some awesome subs (when available) along with bait and tackle.
This week, Amy said, “Things are pretty slow. Haven’t seen hardly a person all day. But,
the weather hasn’t been that great. They were getting some fish right here in the bay. But,
haven’t seen anybody or heard of anything lately. Same with the smelt and suckers. Just
haven’t heard anything. Pretty quiet right now.”
Berglund, (Lake Gogebic) Called four locations. Only one answered phone. That one
said, “Nothing happening.” And, that was that. Also, got the feeling he really did not
want to talk to me. So, I will keep trying.
